PONDICHERRY WOMEN’S COMMISSION
STRATEGIC AREAS

The commission strives in creating women as change makers, builders of new ventures, achievers in learning and skills, daring and confident in accessing their basic rights. With this aim, the commission team works to:
Give priority for empowerment of women
Advocacy, research, publications and legal aid
Economic empowerment, good governance and transformative leadership
Networking with NGOs and other state commission for ensuring gender equality and empowerment of women
Interacting with media, social activists and academician to suggest the ways of ensuring due representation of women in all spheres
State and local visits to evaluate the progress of development of women in various states and especially in Pondicherry

KEY ERRANDS
The Pondicherry Women's Commission initiated various steps to improve the status of women in the state. It received a large number of complaints, upto 125 cases and 122 were able to dispose. Some cases were referred to other state. The Chairperson was given opportunity to address in the workshops and seminars organized by NGOs on domestic violence, empowering self help group women and commemorating world women's day. The regular mandate work of the commission includes:
Enquiry on every Monday and Thursday to help in solving the problems of women through individual or family counseling
Every second and fourth Wednesday, the Chairperson visits Karaikal to know the status of women and suggest them with options for development
Every Saturday the commission helps the parents to meet their legally separated children. A separate room is allotted in the Commission office to avoid perilous situations, if the children taken outside by the parents.
Funds from National Women's Commission is allotted to NGOs to conduct awareness camps on legal issues, usage of cooking gas and other safety measures for women.
Periodical meetings with local NGOs are conducted once in three months -

Being a resource person / facilitator / attendee in the meetings organized at the Pondicherry state

Networking and Referrals are done with other state women's commission, legal service authorities, institutions and homes for differently challenged people
