PONDICHERRY WOMENS COMMISSION

FROM THE CHAIRPERSON'S DESK

2004
marked a major milestone in establishing the commission. The
commission was set up the office, recruited more staff and made
aware its services to the public. There was comparatively greater
change reported in the domestic violence and atrocities against
women in Pondicherry. Services extended to nearby district,
Karaikal created an opportunity for women to approach us and
avail their basic rights. Every staff of the commission is keen
in gathering details and worked under pressure to meet the needs
of women. There was a evident change in women economic and social
life. |
The
commission looked beyond the individual programs. It contributed
the services during the disaster, Tsunami, international women's
day and world AIDS day. It provided technical support to the
Self Help Groups Associations in Pondicherry. PWC worked closely
with NGOs, civil society institutions and local organizations,
and have built a collaborative support in sharing knowledge
and experience. The legal support was given to the women in
an amicable way to deal the toughest problems especially in
settling dues and property. Overall, we are trying to break
the barriers in the way of advancement of women in the state,
Pondicherry. |
Finally, we look forward to a major initiative
that will take place in 2006; sensitization of police for their
co-operation in women liberation. The regular stream of work
includes awareness programs and camps, workshops for counselors
and public hearing for small scale women entrepreneurs. I look
forward to this initiative as I am sure it will provide many
valuable insights and will help the commission to become even
more effective in its aim to build an empowered society for
women in Pondicherry. |
I thank the National Women's Commission and the
local government in extending their support in every steps of
our growth and not the least, the tremendous efforts of NGOs
and associations for their co-operation in our work. |
